Szabolcs Janik, deputy director of the MRI told M1 Világ magazine that the number of illegal border crossings at the EU’s external border increased month by month in 2021. All the relevant statistics and press reports confirm that by easing travel restrictions against Covid, many people have decided to enter illegally. While the traditional routes remained unconstrained (in particular the Central Mediterranean and the Western Balkans), a new development in 2021 was the increase in the number of border crossings from Belarus.
