Hotspots in Africa? Turning a Controversial Idea into Reality
An analysis by the Migration Research Institute, entitled “Hotspots in Africa? Turning a Controversial Idea into Reality”, gives an overview of the already implemented elements of a more and more comprehensive strategy of the European states for the tackling of mass migration from Africa. The srategy became crystallized at the Paris mini summit, the implications of which are also discussed in this paper.
Despite some alarming long-term trends (overpopulation, challenges to statehood, etc.), a few well-targeted efforts could significantly reduce the number of irregular migrants to Europe. The issue of external hotspots, proposed by the Hungarian government much earlier, is now also at the center of European thinking.
