More than 40,000 illegal border crossings were recorded at Europe’s external borders in the first quarter. Szabolcs Janik said on the morning show of the Karc FM that even in the shadow of the war in Ukraine, Europe is much more attractive economically for people living in neighbouring regions and that the reports of relatives and acquaintances are the most important factors in migration decisions, rather than political statements. “It is meaningful that the first quarter’s illegal arrivals have increased so much that last year’s base no longer shows the impact of the Covid measures,” notes our deputy director.
