The Commission’s new package on migration and asylum seems to be a step forward, however, several Member States have already indicated that they are still unable to support it. Although the reception of asylum seekers is not officially mandatory according to the proposal, it is not at all unrealistic to assume that a Member State which chooses to organize repatriation will eventually be forced to transfer those whom they cannot repatriate to its own territory, said Janik Szabolcs, the deputy director of the Migration Research Institute.
